April 28, 2014

Agenda
Ø  What do we know about diversity on campus?

Previous Diversity Committees Used
Ø  Oregon Diversity Institute and Oregon Students of Color Coalition.

The Innovation Grant
Ø  Proposal sent to UCC Foundation - “Courageous Conversations Summit”
Ø  UCC can use this program as a framework for training to become more racially competent and conscious.
Ø  60 copies of the book to discuss between departments.
Ø  Could use different sessions, reflections, or even load a MOOC over the summer.
Ø  Could be a starting place to frame the committee’s first work.

Collecting Diversity Info
Ø  Survey: Notice to the students to self-collect.
Ø  Marjan - Videos from OSU of how institutions can interview their students

In-service
Ø  Archie Bunker’s Neighborhood is a role-play exercise to examine stereotypes and surface how it feels to be oppressed.
Ø  Possibly have a student panel, Q & A.
Ø  Possibly have a student-presented poetry contest
o   Slam Poetry
o   Katy has done a poetry event
Ø  Arts show based on diversity. Have it be one of the sections of the presentations.

UCC Hiring
Ø  Why does UCC only post within Oregon and internally on the website?
Ø  Post jobs to HigherEdJobs, The Chronicle, other states.
Ø  The departments have unique list serves.

Process for Race/Culture Issues
Ø  Online form for students to send incident reports

Other Ideas
Ø  Students take well to instructors who share their passion/personality
Ø  Some ask, “Why don’t we celebrate white history month?” This could be an important conversation.
Ø  Robert Johnson - recent graduate from UCC studying law wants to be involved.
Ø  Have a month for different brigades e.g. Women’s Month, Color Month,
o   Splitting the responsibility between the departments.
o   Have students and teachers tell stories
Ø  Make a publication w/ everyone’s stories
Ø  Create “Last Lecture” diversity lecture about people’s culture/ experience; like a TED talk
Ø  Paula Ursey and Susan Rochester want to do something about women’s representation and misrepresentation in media
